Being a commuter transformed my car into a plethera of crap. Filled with clothes, food containers, all of the water bottles and whatever else is taking up the backseat. The ironic part is that I just ended my bout of commuting on Monday when I transferred to an office much closer to home. However, my car is still a disaster. After spending lots of time researching clever spring cleaning tips and life-changing organization hacks I thought it was about time to figure out my car cleanliness too!
Almost TEN years ago I got my first car (dear God I am getting old). And I was so sure that it was going to be so clean and organized. I immediately rushed out and grabbed a mini trash bag, the cutest air freshener and all the jazz. So ready to impress my friends and go joy riding. Ten years later and my car lifestyle is a completely different story. My friends are lucky if they can shove enough stuff out of the way to sit down, let alone have it looking fresh and clean. My commuter life has ended so now I have zero excuse for the craziness that I call my backseat.
Freshener Car Hacks
Our cars have a tendency to just be heat boxes which makes them easily gain unwanted smells. Store-bought fresheners are great but they only last so long and can turn musty when overused. Creating your own gives you more freedom in style and variety in scents.
Decorate a wooden clothes hanging clip with pom poms and let your favorite essential oils soak in. Clip it to your vents and let the aroma waft throughout your vehicle.
Use that same idea by putting drops of essential oils onto a cotton ball, wrap a pretty ribbing around it and stick it in your vent.
I have seen things going around about repurposing Downy Unstoppable beads for other scented hacks. Putting a handful into Dollar Store wedding favor bags is a perfect idea to just be able to throw in a seat pocket or something and let the scents flu incognito.
Keeping it Clean
Staying organized is easily thrown out the window when you are rushing in and out of appointments, work and everything else you use your car to get to. Creating easy set ups to keep you mindful of your mess is a great way to start clearing out your car.
Pick up a dry food storage container and put a shopping bag inside. This way not only do you have a portable trash can but it also closes so you don’t have to worry about it falling over.
These car hacks are honestly changing my life. How many times do you throw your bag in the back only to try to do that awkward one-handed backwards grab to try and find your wallet. I would use this tip on my passenger seat for optimal accessibility.
HGTV‘s idea of snagging a popsicle mold for a middle console organizer if pretty genius.
My BIGGEST pet peeve is when grocery bags are bagged and also set inside the car improperly. There is nothing worse then hearing all of your things become unorganized and falling over the place. Creating a clothesline for your grocery bags really makes me feel happy again.

There are a lot of spaces in vehicles that definitely get overlooked. And if you truly think about it we sit in these closed off spaces for hours a week, it is about time we take care of our home away from home.
Use painting sponges to get all those cracks and crevices. Wet them with water or an all purpose cleaner to really soak up and dust that may be lingering. Vents are especially important to keep dust free for cleaner air and fresher scents.

If you’re a mess like me you know that the holders are a well for dirt and sticky messes. Combine a cup, old sock and some cleaner to create the perfect solution to getting into the bottom of those damn cup holders.
